Description
I painted this watercolor thirty years ago in 1990, from a black-and-white century-old photo given to me by Marianne, the girl in pink, when she was in her eighties to use as a reference. The painting was a gift for her younger sister Maureen (in the blue dress). The background shows the old double sidewalks and a glimpse of the stately Victorian homes of Cambridge, Ontario Canada in early 1900.
Of course there was an apple for the teacher and a polished metal lunch bucket! Those enormous bows and droopy white stockings were quite the fashion statement on this annual back-to-school celebration!
Thank you to the hosts of the following groups for featuring my image. I appreciate your kind support and promotion!

Love the background story of how these two sisters looked on their first day of school around eighty years ago, Hanne! You have painted them so beautifully with the big bows in their hair! L/F

What a fabulous story to go with this painting, Hanne. You have painted it so beautifully. I particularly like the bows in their hair. I have pictures of my mom with exactly the same attire. The bows must have been a girls' fashion statement of the time that went by the wayside, years ago.like/f

This is my favorite of all the children's portraits in this collection. It is in tune with the historical period (I had to wear those darn white socks when I was a child) when going to school was a HUGE DEAL and children were dressed as well as the parents could afford. The hairstyles were so formal even for little girls such as these. Thanks for taking me on a little journey into my childhood, Hanne!
Hanne Lore Koehler replied:
I'm so glad this brought back fond memories of your childhood, Marsha! Thank you for your thoughtful comment and support!

Hanne - Had to come back and see this! I am in the midst of painting now. Will share hopefully soon....Trying to put in the colors as the reference is from a b/w photo. Refaved and revoted!

V, Darling prainting of these little girls! The one in the blue dress looks like a picture of my Mom when she was little. I like the dappled sunlight on the sidewalk and the victorian looking house in the background. My Mother rode to school of a school bus that was a house drawn wagon. In the winter (Iowa) they sat on each others feet!
Hanne Lore Koehler replied:
Thank you for your delightful story, Linda! What a great way to keep the toes from freezing! I appreciate your kind support, my friend!
