Description
I painted this watercolor painting called SLAM DUNKIN DOG for my children's story book called "MY BROTHER AND I". This is the story of two brothers and the sports, games and activities they enjoy together through summer and winter seasons. Like most children, they have a special wish for a pet which, for now, lives in their imagination. Featured here are the boys playing basketball with their imaginary dog who is always included in the fun. In this scene, one of the boys holds the fictitious dog on his shoulders while his brother tries to prevent the imaginary dog from slam dunking the basketball into the net. The dog seems to be having great fun.
We are very lucky to have two wonderful grandsons upon whom this story is based. Like most proud grandparents, we have a whole stack of family photos in which I could find facial references. After painting details of the children, I painted an impressionistic background by splashing watercolor pigment and water into an already wet paper canvas to give the impression of colorful spectators and flashing cameras. Both the children and I imagined the cheering crowd. I had as much fun creating the dog from my own imagination as, I'm sure, the children had.
