Description
Believe it or not, politicians always seem to have something to say.
This candid painting of Canada's Prime Minister, the right honourable Jean Chretien, star of the political stage, with his wife Aline was commissioned by the proud grandmother of the children in the painting who were chosen to present gifts to the stately couple at a local function. I painted this celebrity portrait in my studio using a photo taken by the grandmother as reference for my watercolor painting. Having worked on the Mr. Chretien's political campaign, she was able to take the completed painting to Ottawa for the Prime Minister to autograph and gave him a framed print of the original painting.
A candid portrait such as this of a head of state can humanize the position. Sadly, in his youth, Chretien suffered an attack of Bell's palsy, permanently leaving the left side of his face partially paralyzed. He used this to his advantage, however, in his first Liberal leadership campaign, saying that he was "One politician who didn't talk out of both sides of his mouth." Respectfully, the opposition did not mention that he is also deaf in one ear. The right honourable Jean Chretien was Prime Minister of Canada from November 4, 1993, to December 12, 2003.
