Description
The gentle purple lavender tones of the Purple Cone Flower (Echinasea) and its striking beauty in the garden make this a popular perennial bloom in Canadian country gardens. The original painting is long and narrow to emphasize the shape of this beautiful plant. In this watercolor painting of three Purple Cone Flowers, I kept my focus on the reddish brown Fibonacci spiral centers of these blooms.
In mathematics, the Fibonacci numbers or Fibonacci series or Fibonacci sequence are the numbers in the following integer sequence: 0,1,1,2,3,5,8,13,21,34,55,89,144,... By definition, the first two numbers in the Fibonacci sequence are 0 and 1, and each subsequent number is the sum of the previous two. It is intimately connected with the golden ratio; for example, the closest rational approximations to the ratio are 2/1, 3/2, 5/3, 8/5, ... which has been a ratio technique employed by artists in their paintings for many centuries.
The Fibonacci Sequence also appears in biological settings, such as the spiraling center of the purple cone flower, branching in trees, the spiral of a snail's shell, the fruit sprouts of a pineapple, the flowering of artichoke, an uncurling fern, the arrangement of a pine cone and seashells. I'm sure you can think of many more!
