Description
I was commissioned to paint this watercolor portrait of a magnificent home in Guelph, Ontario as a Christmas gift from the homeowners' generous sister who lives in England - a thoughtful gift to be treasured. She sent me about 10 photos of the home that were taken from different perspectives in summer and in winter; however, she requested a detailed autumn watercolor painting because the colors would suit the decor of the home.
After studying the photos, I decided to use one of the winter photos as reference for the perspective of the home. It seemed to reveal the best view and included the front door, side windows, roof line and a good view of the landscaping. I used the summer photos as reference to determine where and what kind of foliage, perennials, shrubbery were in the garden. Then I transformed the green summer foliage into an autumn scene. The deep blue autumn sky is a good contrast to the golden ornamental grasses with white seed heads and yellow leaves of the birch tree. I created drama with sunlight, shadows and color contrasts. I painted as much detail in the home as I could for the size of painting without losing the watercolor look.
